Get Inspired

Screen Shot 2017-01-09 at 7 36 37 PMWhenever you’re trying to come up with a new idea but can’t seem to think of one, sometimes all you need is a little bit of inspiration. Roberto Lama, an aspiring biotechnologist, was struggling to think “of an aesthetically pleasing yet useful gift” for his mom. Having been “designing various architectural projects for the Scholastic Art & Writing competition, I was in a designer’s block,” Lama said. Needing some inspiration, Lama decided to take a look at some of his past projects and came across his model of the Coral’s song. The Coral’s Song was designed to bring awareness of how important corals are and to help “share their story. Coral reefs are a vital part of the marine aquatic ecosystem. All around the world they are dying due to the increase of temperature and acidity in the water. Once these corals die, the ecosystem is ruined. All that is left behind are white, calcium carbonate skeleton corals,” Lama explained.

After looking at his creation, he thought of the perfect gift to give his mother. Wanting to make a different rendition of the Coral’s Song, he decided to make it into a Voronoi Candle Holder.

I knew the light emitted from a candle would be pretty, so I made a new version of the Coral’s Song smaller and smoother in order to fit a candle inside of it. I also inserted a small ledge so the candle is not on the floor,” Lama said. It turned out to be a beautiful gift  that was perfect for his mom. Who knew by him looking at his past work would turn his inspiration into creation. It was not only meaningful for him, but also special for his mom. If you’re trying to figure out what to get your mom for Mother’s Day, 3D print Roberto Lama’s Voronoi Candle Holder and tell her that “she lights the way”. The best gifts that are given are given from the heart. See more of his designs here.
